Is it ok to turn down EVERY handshake??

Coronavirus… It’s a punk! It’s messing everything up!!  It’s even messing up common courtesy and manners!  So, in the current Coronavirus era we live in, is it really ok to turn down EVERY handshake offered to you?

My wife and I were at the Home Depot buying some OSB/plywood yesterday.  We bought it and rolled the big 4 foot by 8 foot plywood boards out to my truck and started putting it in the bed when a stranger parked his truck and offered to help load the rest of the boards with us.  I said “Sure! Thanks so much.”  And, he did it! Shortened our load time in half! It was great! Then it got awkard……. I said “Thank you so much!” and then instinctively threw out my hand for a hand shake… Then HE instinctively threw out his…  WAIT! We’re not supposed to do this! Corona! He doesn’t want a hand shake! Right?! or does he?? I would never NOT shake a man’s hand who just did me a favor… But!  I pulled my hand back a little.  He pulled his hand back a little.  We stood there almost shaking hands for what seemed like and eternity!  Looking each other in the eyes… we gave in, and risked our LIVES and shook hands!  It felt right… but was it the right thing to do in the Coronavirus era?  I would have felt like an absolute jerk if I hadn’t thanked him and shook his hand! (And… a fistbump just seem wrong in this scenario)   Did I do the right thing?
